‘Private Images, Public Emergency: Explainer on Sexualised Deepfakes’ examines the technologised harms underlying the use of AI-assisted tools in creating non-consensual intimate imagery of women online. Highlighting how the novel context of such technologies brings forth a whole new spate of regulatory challenges, including difficulties associated with successfully identifying perpetrators and the speed and scale of the spread of such content online.
The Explainer also takes stock of ongoing best practices across the world to address some of these aforementioned challenges. Further, it also offers suggestions and critiques to current regulatory perspectives to ensure that the social menace of sexualised deepfakes is addressed meaningfully and due recourse is given to a victim’s right to dignity and agency.
