Summer School on Platform Governance 2023

The Centre for Communication Governance, National Law University Delhi (CCG NLUD) hosted the seventh edition of the Summer School in partnership with the Hans-Bredow Institut, University of Hamburg and the Institute for Technology and Society of Rio De Janeiro (ITS Rio). The goal of the week- long program was to bring together a diverse set of scholars, instructors, and students for an intensive week of lectures, discussions, and interactive classroom activities. While past editions of the Summer School have focussed on Data Governance, Freedom of Expression & Online Intermediaries, Privacy, Harmful Speech, Surveillance, and Data Protection, this year, the focus of the Summer School was ‘Platform Governance’.

CCG NLUD welcomed twenty students from Brazil and Germany and eight students from the National Law University Delhi as a part of the Summer School cohort of 2023.  The lecture schedule included sessions on Content Moderation, Platform Impact on Elections, The Oversight Board, Platform Transparency, The Content Safety Ecosystem, the EU’s Digital Services Act, and Platforms, Competition & Consumer Protection Issues. The program included a keynote lecture by Shyam Divan (Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of India) and a guest lecture by Pamela San Martin, a former Electoral Councillor at the National Electoral institute in Mexico and current member of Meta’s Oversight Board.

We believe that this summer school provided an invaluable opportunity to bring together students, academics, and practitioners across the three jurisdictions to identify some common lessons that can enrich our collective understanding of platform governance.
